How to spot a fake dating profile: warning signs that matter
A fake profile does not always look obviously fake. The stronger signal is a pattern: inconsistent details, constant excuses about meeting, pressure to move off-platform and eventually a request involving money or financial information.
Common warning signs
Fast emotional escalation
The relationship becomes unusually intense before you have built real-world trust.
They cannot meet
Every attempt to meet or verify the person leads to a new excuse.
Stories do not line up
Work, location, family or travel details change over time.
Money enters the story
An emergency, trip, medical issue, investment or another urgent reason appears.
How to verify without turning dating into an investigation
- suggest a short video call,
- reverse-image-search a profile photo if something seems off,
- compare important details across conversations,
- slow down if someone pushes you off-platform immediately,
- never send money or financial access information to an online-only love interest.
The FBI specifically recommends researching a person's photo/profile, going slowly, asking questions and never sending money to someone you only know online or by phone. The FTC similarly warns that romance scammers often move conversations off-platform and eventually ask for money.
