First message online dating: write something that is easy to answer
A good opener does not need to be brilliant. It should show that you noticed something in the other person’s profile and give them an easy way into the conversation.
A simple formula
Notice one detail
A trip, dog, book, hobby, weekend routine or sentence from the bio.
Add your reaction
One short line from you makes the message feel specific rather than copied.
Ask an easy question
Give them something they can answer without writing an essay.
Leave space
You do not need to tell your life story in the first message.
Examples
“You’ve been to Portugal — would you go back to Lisbon or spend more time outside the city? It’s been on my list for ages.”
“Your dog looks like they’re clearly in charge of the walking route 😄 What are they called?”
“Important compatibility test: espresso or a massive coffee you can talk over for half an hour?”
“You said you like relaxed weekends — more likely a day out somewhere or a full day with no plan?”
Avoid these
- a standalone “hey” with no conversation hook,
- a compliment with nothing to reply to,
- a long autobiography,
- very personal or sexual questions at the start.
